DeskCheck by Stackdrop

Version 1.2.1 • Real monitor power-off (wake-safe)

Step away from your desk with confidence. One click powers every monitor off — cursor hidden, panels dark, distractions gone. Not Windows lock: no password, just unlock and you're back.

What's new in v1.2.1

  • Bump ≠ unlock — a light mouse touch re-sleeps the monitors
  • 2 seconds of continuous movement to unlock by mouse, or any key / click
  • Black privacy cover if a display wakes early

Antivirus / SmartScreen notice: DeskCheck is a new, unsigned portable .exe. Windows Defender, SmartScreen, or your antivirus may warn you — this is a common false positive for small tools. If prompted, click More info → Run anyway (SmartScreen) or Allow / Restore in your antivirus. DeskCheck is built by Stackdrop, runs entirely on your PC, and never phones home.

What your screen looks like while DeskCheck is active

What is DeskCheck?

DeskCheck is a lightweight Windows utility that sends your displays into real power-off (the same Windows monitor-off signal used for idle sleep) — not a fake black window while the panel stays lit. The mouse cursor is hidden while locked. Unlocking wakes the displays and exits instantly.

Run the portable DeskCheck.exe, and your monitors go dark until you decide to come back. No installation, no account, no nonsense.

Not Windows lock screen. DeskCheck does not trigger Win+L or the sign-in screen. Unlocking never asks for your Windows password — monitors wake and you’re right back on your desktop.

Real Monitor Power-Off

Uses Windows SC_MONITORPOWER so panels actually turn off — saving power and privacy, not just painting black.

All Monitors

Applies across your entire setup — dual monitors, ultrawides, and mixed displays.

Hidden Cursor

The system pointer is fully hidden while locked. Nothing peeks through.

Instant & Portable

Single .exe file. Double-click to lock. No installer, no registry changes.

Private & Local

Runs entirely on your machine. No data collection, no cloud, no tracking.

No Windows Lock Screen

Not Win+L. No password prompt. Unlock returns you straight to your desktop — not the Windows sign-in screen.

How to unlock

DeskCheck is designed to be easy to dismiss when you return — but opaque to casual observers. This is not the Windows lock screen: no password, no PIN, no sign-in page. Any one of these will close DeskCheck and restore your desktop:

⌨️
Any key Press any keyboard key
🖱️
Any click Left, right, or middle mouse button
↔️
Mouse movement Move the mouse continuously for 2 seconds

How to use

  1. Download — Grab DeskCheck.exe using the button above. Save it anywhere — Desktop, Downloads, or a USB stick.
  2. Allow it if warned — Windows SmartScreen or your antivirus may flag the file because it is new and unsigned. Click More info → Run anyway on SmartScreen, or allow/restore the file in your antivirus. This is a false positive — DeskCheck is safe and local-only.
  3. Run — Double-click the file. Your monitors power off immediately. The cursor vanishes.
  4. Step away — Your screen content is hidden. Grab coffee, take a call, walk the dog.
  5. Return & unlock — Press any key, click, or wiggle the mouse for 2 seconds. DeskCheck closes and your desktop is back instantly — no Windows password required.

Perfect for

  • Open offices & shared spaces — Hide sensitive documents when you leave your desk.
  • Home offices — Quick privacy when family walks into the room.
  • Focus breaks — A hard visual stop between work sessions.
  • Presentations & demos — Black out screens before sharing or switching inputs.

FAQ

Is this the same as Windows lock (Win+L)? No. DeskCheck powers your monitors off and hides the cursor. It does not lock Windows, log you out, or show the sign-in screen. When you unlock DeskCheck, monitors wake and you return directly to your open apps — no password needed.
Does DeskCheck turn off my monitors? Yes. It uses the same Windows monitor power-off command as idle sleep, so the panels actually go dark (and use less power). v1.2.1 no longer keeps a fullscreen black window on top while they are off — that was causing the wake hang.
Will I get locked out forever? No. Press any key, click the mouse, or move it continuously for 2 seconds to unlock. DeskCheck stays on until you do one of those.
Does it work with multiple monitors? Yes. DeskCheck covers your entire virtual desktop — all connected displays at once.
Why does my antivirus or Windows warn me about DeskCheck? DeskCheck is a small, unsigned portable .exe from a newer tool. Antivirus software and Windows SmartScreen often flag files like this until they build reputation — even when the file is completely safe. If you see a warning, use More info → Run anyway on SmartScreen, or allow/restore the file in your antivirus. DeskCheck does not install anything, does not connect to the internet, and does not collect data.
Is it safe? Does it send data anywhere? DeskCheck runs 100% locally. No internet connection required, no telemetry, no ads.
What versions of Windows are supported? Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit).
